Amazon.com Review

This book's introduction features a humorous story of a man with a line of people behind him, who explains to his boss, "I can't find an efficient algorithm, but neither can all these famous people." This man illustrates an important quality of a class of problems, namely, the NP-complete problems: if you can prove that a problem is in this class, then it has no known polynomial-time solution that is guaranteed to work in general. This quality implies that the problem is difficult to deal with in practice. The focus of this book is to teach the reader how to identify, deal with, and understand the essence of NP-complete problems; Computers and Intractability does all of those things effectively. In a readable yet mathematically rigorous manner, the book covers topics such as how to prove that a given problem is NP-complete and how to cope with NP-complete problems. (There is even a chapter on advanced topics, with numerous references.) Computers and Intractability also contains a list of more than 300 problems--most of which are known to be NP-complete--with comments and references.

I have to say that this is a true classic. It gives a very nice treatment of what is NP-completeness in a fashion that really defends the topic well. It gives nice illustrations to show different situations and how to deal with it. But after the first couple of chapters it does get a little out there with the proofs it does. It is still approachable, but it assumes that the reader is already familiar with the basics of combinatorial complexity, especially in reductions. I would only recommend this book to readers who has gone through such books as Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen et al. or Combinatorial Complexity by Papadimitriou and Steiglitz. Those two books are more for beginners and this book should be one to help anyone interested in NP-complete problems to get more practice and depth understanding. Overall a great book for anyone interested in the topic. The grand challenge is to reduce everything to at least something within the 150 problems listed on your own.

I bought this text at the suggestion of my professor. This is a challenging book but very well written and a great resource for understanding the theory with plenty of examples.

Not for the soft at heart, but gives a good explanation of the NP world...

great

A bit of a tough read. Have pencil and paper ready, but well worth the effort. Requires some abstract math background to make sense of it.

This book is photocopy, not a original book. Donot buy it.

This is a must have for every student of computer science.

The book is excellent in explaining NP-completeness problem. Take it as a reference if you would like to do research in this field.

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he loves it. It has so much information and he said if you can not find it in this book then it probably was never made. The only bad thing about the book is now he wants to go out and buy some new guns.

My father has bought one of these about every year for decades. Since his stroke, he has not bothered with them. As a birthday gift for him I decided to see if it was well received. Fantastic. In his lap each visit for two months now!

Significant listing of all firearms. If you can't find it in this book, it probably doesn't exist! Worth the bucks.

This is a very good reference for shooters.

Get this annually if you like to see what's out there and what's coming out in the firearm industry. It's a huge book and it's a good read, with plenty of pictures so it's easy to identify firearms you may be interested in. Every year the book seems to get bigger and better, and this edition was no different.

does what it says on the box. A very comprehensive if very brief rundown on what's on the market

One must keep abreast of new hunting tools. You can never have too many guns.

The book you need to catch up on the Gun World, can always be used for reference

This story had me in tears from beginning to end! Love conquers all sometimes. Truth love and honesty over came all 😢

This was a definite page turner. Jealousy played a major role in this story. Ciara was in a imaginary relationship. She just wouldn't give up. And that pic got her the well overdue butt kicking. I felt bad that Jordan was caught in a jealous rampage. Caesar and Savannah was opposites and she finally let him in and never looked back. I was happy that she set up the dinner with Caesar and Quincy's mom. Her story was heartfelt. Princess and Marcus finally gave in after all that playing. Great Job

I really am in disbelief about Ciara and Sterling? Well not really that girl is crazy and once Sterling found out about Ceasar, i knew he was gonna clap back. Savannah been running from Ceasar for a long time and I'm glad they got it together. They hit some major stumbling blocks with both of their families tho. Death, deceit, betrayal, multiple babies, you name it it happened! Im just glad that the truth was revealed, revenge was given, fakeness exposed, and happily ever after occurred

Ciara was one delusional chick. I couldn’t stand her. She causes so much trouble and because of it someone that didn’t deserve to lost their life. Caesar loved him some Savannah. Those two were the cutest couple. Layla and Quincy definitely weren’t made for each other. She gave up entirely too quick because of certain things. I was glad the boys put some of their lives back together and let go of the hurt they were holding onto. This was overall a good read.

Tooo much! Is there a part 2 somewhere I have some unanswered questions! Caesar was bae all day. I don’t know what type of mess he was working with smh. But it had Ciara delusional after one time. One time! Make it make sense please. That broad was coo coo for coco puffs🤦🏽‍♀️. That plot twist though I never would’ve thought it. Incredible

Good job on writing this book Melissa. I really enjoyed it from star to finish. Thank goodness Ciara is out of the way so that Savannah and Cesar gave live a happy life.

Good from beginning to the very end. Loved Caesar and Savannah. Highly recommend reading this book. Not my last book by this author.

Yes I was good love the couples u hate j got killed caria was just crazy what happen to la la I'm happy the boys let they mom back in they life

Pros:- Helpful for what to run for those of us with limited days to do it.- Convincing about the value of intensity.- Easy to navigate - especially finding charts in Kindle version.Cons:- A bit of a bait-and-switch on "run less" when an hour of cross-training twice/week is supposed to replace runs.- Too much marathon focus - it's not every runner's goal. Accordingly, lots of superfluous information.- Filler inspirational stories - book could have been shorter in many ways.

As a 45 year old runner who got back into running after 10 years of inactivity, I wanted a simple and injury free method to get back into shape so I could run a half marathon in 6 months. I read many articles and running methods and sometimes its the simple ones that are most effective. This book breaks the oldest training myth of "no pain no gain" and the more miles you run, the better you will be. Since my goal was to maximize training without injury, I couldn't run max miles so that is reason why this book makes the most sense. Running three times a week with dedicated and focused purpose (medium tempo run, interval and slow long run) will provide maximum gains while avoiding injuries. After 3months, I can already run 13.1 miles with 10:30pace and that's medium intensity. I'm sure I can run the half marathon in less than 2hrs. I'm a believer.

I believe this book was intended for serious runners; runners who want to train to be their best in specific events. I believe the training method would work well for anyone at any level or pace, but most of the information seems to be geared towards qualifiers for the Boston Marathon. Also, while the book will work for runners of all levels, from beginning to very experienced runner, the authors do recommend that you are able to run at least 15 miles per week for three months before starting their training program. The premise of the book is one of quality over quantity. Instead of increasing your running each week with a lot of junk miles, the authors recommend three key runs per week. The key runs include a tempo run, track work, and one long run. The other days are for crosstraining and rest. One recommendation from the authors that struck me is that you should concentrate on just three or four important races per year and train for those, rather than run a lot of races, something that would be difficult for me, because I love races. But that is how marathon runners become their best.I'm not running quite 15 miles per week right now, so I can't give a testimonial on how well this training plan works for me, but I am planning to run a half marathon in a few months and by the time I finish that I will have been running more than 15 miles per week for more than three months, so I will be able to test the entire training plan. For now, I am including track work in my current training plan. That much I know I need to do.The book is an easy read and makes a lot of sense. If you are a runner and you want to improve, but you thought the only way to do better is to run more, read this book. I think you'll find that by improving the quality of your training you can do better without adding more miles. At least that's what many runners who have already started using this training method have said.

My copy of this book is completely dog eared and marked with pink highlights. This training method is really effective. Running hard but only three days per week helps me recover from each run I can see myself getting faster. I feel like a real runner. I also do the two days per week of cross training. I bought a rower and an indoor cycling bike for this purpose. There are training guides for using the exercise equipment which have made the equipment enjoyable to use. This book is very inexpensive and I recommend it to everyone wanting to run faster.

This book helped me shave 1:30 minutes per mile off my 5K pace (Went from 9:30 pace to finished a race at 8 flat. I'm a 41 female and have been running for 4 years). Best of all, I did it without running daily. I was having knee issues so wanted to give this a try and it has helped so much. I now do cross training on my non running days. Again, great info for any runner.

A remarkable book that will assist any runner who is wise enough to follow all the guidelines as written.. I have started my program on Sunday 30th April 2017, and have now completed 2 cross training sessions, the first two key runs, 1 strength session and 2 stretching sessions and feel as if I have already achieved something that I had not done before.

So far I love this book. It's a little confusing at times, but I'm trying to figure it all out. The only thing I don't like is that it states that novice runners can do the training programs, but even for novice it starts out with high miles for long run days. I'm not sure how well that will do on the body of a beginner runner. Other than that, I REALLY like this book because it gives me an organizational plan.

When you live an extremely busy life, and yet running is the very last thing you'd give up, you'll need to prioritize your workouts. This book focuses on the key sessions that will keep the runner fit and marathon ready. Whether you race well, your best or otherwise using the program prescribed depends on your genetic makeup, and your inherent/base fitness level. Still this book gives me comfort that a very busy lifestyle doesn't mean you've to be any less competitive.

Lewis, and George Orwell as one of the few fortunate possessors of a splendid prose style."— Commonweal"Readers of earlier books by T.H. About the Author

Terence Hanbury White (1906–1964) was born in Bombay, India, and educated at Queen’s College, Cambridge. His childhood was unhappy—”my parents loathed each other,” he later wrote—and he grew up to become a solitary person with a deep fund of strange lore and a tremendous enthusiasm for fishing, hunting, and flying (which he took up to overcome his fear of heights). White taught for some years at the Stowe School until the success in 1936 of England Have My Bones, a book about outdoor adventure, allowed him to quit teaching and become a full-time writer. Along with The Goshawk, White was the author of twenty-six published works, including his famed sequence of Arthurian novels, The Once and Future King; the fantasy Mistress Masham’s Repose (published in The New York Review Children’s Collection); a collection of essays on the eighteenth century, The Age of Scandal; and a translation of a medieval Latin bestiary, A Book of Beasts. He died at sea on his way home from an American lecture tour and is buried in Piraeus, Greece.Fritz Eichenberg (1901-1990) was born and raised in Germany, where he became a successful political cartoonist. The rise of Hitler made him worry about his family’s safety, and in 1933 he left Germany for the United States, where he illustrated classics such as Crime and Punishment and Wuthering Heights, along with the pages of Dorothy Day’s radical news-sheet The Catholic Worker. Eichenberg also founded the Pratt Graphic Arts Center in Manhattan. He considered his teaching work “ a debt I have paid off to this country. . . . I’m very fond of America as a country that has welcomed so many people from different parts of the world without asking questions.”

I have an old copy, so I got this for the young daughter of a friend. I've often thought of sending a copy to Stephen Spielburg with a note saying "don't you think it's time to produce this as a movie?" It's a wonderful story, and deserves more 'visibility' than it seems to have ever gotten.

A young person's fantasy novel about politics and character, literary history and ethics - with writing so good it reminds you of what literature can and should be.

Lilliputians unite! T.H. White's children plot is delightful and engaging with characters you love to hate and enjoy seeing foiled. Its setting is a run down British estate that happens to also harbor a colony of very little people. The main character, Maria, learns to see the Lilliputians as real individuals rather than her personal playthings. The book climaxes in a cliff hanger with all the fun that can be culled from odious villians and bumbling rescuers in an ancient locale. This book is absorbing for both adults and children.

A book for precocious children or those who like reading to children. It's the story of an eleven-year-old orphaned girl who finds a colony of 6 inch Lilliputians in the garden of her stately home. Her horrible guardians would like to sell the Lilliputians, and Maria and the Professor (who lives in the garden) and Mrs Noakes (the cook) have to work hard to save them. Funny, good moral questions about power, dictatorship (should Maria be their Queen?)and wonderful descriptions of the Lilliputian community - much better than Swift's.

On the grounds of the enormous, once splendid but now dilapidated 17th century estate where she lives, ten year old Maria discovers a colony of Lilliputians, who have been living there since they were brought back two hundred years before by an associate of some fellow named Gulliver. When Maria's cruel, greedy, and unscrupulous guardians discover her secret and plot to sell the Lilliputians to a circus or (horrors) Hollywood, things get really sticky. Virtue, however, triumphs in the end. One of the most delightful things about this delightful book is how White managed to cram each page full of erudite and witty refrences to and jokes about 17th and 18th century english political, military, and literary history. Yes, they wrote children's books differently in 1946 - it's a shame they don't write them that way now...

What a wonderful trek down memory lane! I owned a copy of this book when I was 10 and remember being so riveted by it that when it was time to go to bed I took the book under the covers with me and finished reading it by the light of my Girl Scout flashlight. (Which no doubt accounts for why I have such bad eyesight as an adult!) Since my own copy had been long gone, I was delighted to discover I could buy a replacement on Amazon. Instead of preceding this one with a cup of hot chocolate and finishing the last chapters by flashlight, however, I had a martini and happily stayed up until midnight. Time has not diminished in any way the satisfaction of a tale well told.

I am a writer and read this book as part of my own research. It was good be a little difficult to follow. There are several references to British places, people and historical events that I am not familiar with but I still enjoyed it.

This whimsical story is about a 10-year-old orphan girl, Maria, who discovers a community of lilliputians living on an island within her large English estate. Her guardians, a governess and vicar, are stealing monies from the estate and then attempt to capture the small people. Maria's friends--her cook, an aged professor and the cook's dog, as well as the little people, help her attempts to defeat the swindlers. The author, T.H. White brings the same charm and descriptive power used in The Once and Future King to this lesser known story. I discovered this novel as a child and just read it again as a much older person with the same appreciation. There are many messages in this story about self-reliance and ethics. Winning is possible despite size, age, money, and gender.

Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, by Alexandra Fuller

Review

“Electrifying…Writing in shimmering, musical prose… Ms. Fuller manages the difficult feat of writing about her mother and father with love and understanding, while at the same time conveying the terrible human costs of the colonialism they supported… Although Ms. Fuller would move to America with her husband in 1994, her own love for Africa reverberates throughout these pages, making the beauty and hazards of that land searingly real for the reader.” —Michiko Kakutani, THE NEW YORK TIMES “Ten years after publishing Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood, Alexandra (Bobo) Fuller treats us in this wonderful book to the inside scoop on her glamorous, tragic, indomitable mother…Bobo skillfully weaves together the story of her romantic, doomed family against the background of her mother’s remembered childhood.” —THE WASHINGTON POST “Another stunner… The writer's finesse at handling the element of time is brilliant, as she interweaves near-present-day incidents with stories set in the past. Both are equally vivid… With "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" Alexandra Fuller, master memoirist, brings her readers new pleasure. Her mum should be pleased.”   —CLEVELAND PLAIN-DEALER “Fuller's narrative is a love story to Africa and her family. She plumbs her family story with humor, memory, old photographs and a no-nonsense attitude toward family foibles, follies and tragedy. The reader is rewarded with an intimate family story played out against an extraordinary landscape, told with remarkable grace and style.” —MINNEAPOLIS STAR-TRIBUNE “[Fuller] conveys the magnetic pull that Africa could exert on the colonials who had a taste for it, the powerful feeling of attachment. She does not really explain that feeling—she is a writer who shows rather than tells—but through incident and anecdote she makes its effects clear, and its costs.” —THE WALL STREET JOURNAL “[A]n artistic and emotional feat.” —THE BOSTON GLOBE “An eccentric, quixotic and downright dangerous tale with full room for humor, love and more than a few highballs.” —HUFFINGTON POST “Cocktail Hour [Under the Tree of Forgetfulness] subtly explores the intersections of personality, history, and landscape in ways that are continually fresh and thoughtful.” —CHARLESTON POST AND COURIER “Gracefully recounted using family recollections and photos, the author plumbs the narrative with a humane and clear-eyed gaze—a lush story, largely lived within a remarkable place and time.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS “In this sequel to her 2001 memoir, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, which her unflattered mum calls the ‘Awful Book,’ Duller gives a warm yet wry account of her British parents’ arduous life in Africa. . . . With searing honesty and in blazingly vibrant prose, Fuller re-creates her mother’s glorified Kenyan girlhood and visits her forever-wild parents at their Zambian banana and fish farm today. The result is an entirely Awesome Book.” —MORE MAGAZINE “Fuller brings Africa to life, both its natural splendor and the harsher realities of day-to-day existence, and sheds light on her parents in all their humanness—not a glaring sort of light, but the soft equatorial kind she so beautifully describes in this memoir.” —BOOKPAGE “Fuller revisits her vibrant, spirited parents, first introduced in Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight (2001), which her mother referred to as that ‘awful book’. . . . This time around, Nicola is well aware her daughter is writing another memoir, and shares some of her memories under the titular Tree of Forgetfulness, which looms large by the elder Fullers’ house in Zambia. Fuller’s prose is so beautiful and so evocative that readers will feel that they, too, are sitting under that tree. A gorgeous tribute to both her parents and the land they love.” —BOOKLIST (starred review) “A sardonic follow-up to her first memoir about growing up in Rhodesia circa the 1970s, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, this work traces in wry, poignant fashion the lives of her intrepid British parents. . . . Fuller achieves another beautifully wrought memoir.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

While there is, as one critic mentioned, considerable overlap with the author's first book (Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight), I found this one even more fascinating and compelling, with many elements I consider when evaluating a memoir: * It contains lyrical and vivid writing that pulls the reader into the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of the narrative's places, especially Africa. * It offers an introduction to a world and culture and place that is so utterly foreign to me, I felt as though I had gone on a grand safari myself. * Its character development was both harsh and compassioniate, especially the rendering of the author's mother "Nicola Fuller of Central Africa." * The story provides keen insight into the often unmentioned civilian victims of war. * The narrative explores life's emotional complexities of, and brutalities against, the human heart, yet it moves quickly enough not to become maudlin or mired dark places. * It inspired me to think about how I would react in some of the unspeakably awful circumstances that Nicola Fuller, the author (Nicola's daughter), and others in the family had to face. We judge others at our own peril. * The author's ability to step back far enough to see her family with the eye of an artist and the heart of a loved one impressed me. * The book succeeds, I believe, in conveying why anyone might be willing, against incredible odds, to keep coming back to what must be a very seductive part of the world. Here are some quotes I noted:Speaking of her mother's childhood in Kenya: "It was, in many ways, a charmed and feral childhood."Describing the brutal landscape: "It was toward the end of the long dry season; the wind had been red all day with dust blown in from Uganda and settling on everything like powdered blood, the sun blistered out of a high, clear sky."...and her mother's garden: "an encouraged tangle of bougainvillea and passion fruit vines, beds of lilies and strelitzia, rows of lilac bushes and caladiums looming over borders of impatiens.""War is Africa's perpetual ripe fruit. There is so much injustice to resolve, such desire for revenge in the blood of the people, such crippling corruption of power, such unseemly scramble for the natural resources. The wind of power shifts and there go the fruit again, tumbling toward the ground, each war more inventively terrible than the last."As the author tells the story of her brother's illness and death: "My impuse is impossible: I want to reach back through the years and protect my young parents from what happens next.""Surely until all of us own and honor one another's dead, until we have admitted to our murders and forgiven one another and ourselves for what we have done, there can be no truce, no dignity and no peace.""People often ask why my parents haven't left Africa. Simply put, they have been possessed by this land."

What a wonderful find. Alexandra Fuller captures the seduction of the African sun and burning landscape. The vast spaces that set the mind sailing seduced her parents and made them stay against great adversity. They lived in Kenya when British Colonists spent their days in royal comfort, but those days ended with a revolution and war in the 60’s. Ms. Fuller masterfully weaves the very personal history of her dramatic childhood and the life of her stiff upper lip parents against the backdrop of a tumultuous time. Her parents chose to remain in Africa after their lands were seized and to set up housekeeping in remote Zambia where they found peace under the” Tree of Forgetfullness”. I have ordered the third book in the trilogy of Ms. Fuller’s stunning memoir.[...]

I love the way she writes - the feel of her words going across my brain, for lack of a clearer expression. It’s steady, there are no extra words, the pace is brisk, the details are crisp. Her ear for spoken language is brilliant. Her descriptions of smells are without compare. This is the third book I’ve read by Ms. Fuller and I’ve loved them all. The moment I submit this review I’m going to begin my fourth one. I’m happy she’s such a prolific writer!

I enjoyed Fuller's other book, "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," so much that I immediately bought this one. While "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" is a good, solid book, there were enough similarities between the two that I often felt I was reading the first book over again. "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" paints a vivid, personal picture of Fuller's childhood in Africa. The hardships she endures, brought on by conditions, bad choices, and even worse luck, are an individual tapestry of place and time from the author's own perspective. I felt like I was right there with her, seeing life through the lens of her changing perspective as she matured. In "Cocktail Hour," Fuller focuses more on her amazing and sometimes maddening mother and her life before, during, and after Alexandra came into the world. It's true that her mother is a larger than life character, and she already figures prominently in the first book. If I had read "Cocktail Hour" first, I would probably give it four stars, but because so much of it already felt familiar, I was a bit disappointed. If you haven't read "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," I highly recommend it! If you want to read "Cocktail Hour" as well, I'd suggest letting a few months or years pass first so it feels more like a fresh book.

Ms. Fuller has written an intriguing story of her parents' lives in [mostly] eastern Africa, their struggles during and after British control and what the white farming experience was [and I guess is] like in that vast continent. She does an excellent job describing the beauty and horrors of living daily life there; particularly touching is the Fullers' deep love for Africa which is quite palpable throughout the book - they just can't imagine living anywhere else and always come back. I'd really like to know these people! No obstacle deters them from scratching out a living on various farms they either own or manage. And it's clear how much Ms. Fuller loves and admires them for their perseverance. Some of the descriptions of the surroundings and landscapes are so lovely - particularly as evening falls - that I felt as though I were sitting right there with Ms. Fuller and her mother as they reminisce together. Two minor negatives are 1) the book starts off a little jumbled and would have been better had it proceeded chronologically as it does as it gets going, and 2) more pictures and maps of the regions the Fullers lived and traveled in would have been helpful.
